- 1972 - Jesse Helms is elected to his first term in the U.S. Senate.
- 1976 - The Briggs Initiative (Proposition 6) which would have prohibited gay or gay positive teachers and teachings in California public schools is soundly defeated.
- 1976 - Seattle voters vote to keep their city's gay rights ordinance.
- 1989 - thirtysomething airs the first network showing of two gay men in bed together.
- 1989 - Voters in Concord, California, repeal a city ordinance banning discrimination against people with AIDS.
- 1990 - Vito Russo, gay activist and film commentator, dies of AIDS at the age of forty-four.
