It's a (Fill in the Blank) World After All!

You'd have to have been living on another planet not to have heard about the Baptist's second try at boycotting Disney.

Why are they boycotting Disney? Because, in their opinion, Disney assists homosexuals in desensitizing children by holding and promoting gay day. They ask, "Can you Trust Disney with your child's heart & soul?"

What everybody seems to be forgetting, is that this isn't a new Boycott. These same Southern Baptists passed this same type of resolution last year. Guess what? It wasn't successful. So they huffed and they puffed and they're trying again.

So what has Disney done that is so awful?

Well, let's see.... they allow events like "Gay Day at Disneyland" to be held. Why don't the Southern Baptists like that? Don't they preach that we would stay away from them? What better way to make them happy than to segregate ourselves at Disney when they're not there with their own families and children.

Another of their reasons is that Disney owned ABC Television has Ellen Morgan, lead character of the TV show Ellen, "come out" as a homosexual. I shared my thoughts on this historic episode a couple of weeks ago.

Other reasons include Disney chairman Michael Eisner's work with Hollywood Supports, an organization established to fight discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and HIV status along with Eisner and Disney's donations to People for the American Way a group that monitors the activities of the Religious Right.

Between you and me, I have to wonder about a group that is upset about an organization that supports "the American way...." - beyond that, if they aren't doing anything "wrong" then why are they so upset that there is an organization that publicizes their activities?

Disney also dared to help underwrite a 1993 Hollywood benefit for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. This group's crime seems to be providing legal assistance to Gays and Lesbians whose liberty and rights are at risk. Can an organization be more un-American than that!?

Unfortunately for the Southern Baptists, while they're getting a lot of press coverage, most of it is negative, and even their own members aren't wholeheartedly supporting the boycott.

They don't even have the support of the most prominent Southern Baptist of them all. Perhaps you've heard of him... President Clinton.

Well, I do wish the Southern Baptists luck. After all, I'm a firm believer in voicing my opinion via my pocketbook.

It's not going to be easy, however, since Disney acquired Capital Cities/ABC its holdings, including subsidiaries, are enormous. It will take a lot of work for the Southern Baptists who want to support the boycott to refrain from putting money into the Disney coffers.

Just to help them out, here's a list of all the companies that are part of the Disney family. While you're taking a look at the list, do feel free to let the folks on the list know that you're planning to spend your dollars there because of the boycott.
