Dear Wondering,

There are as many answers as there are gays and lesbians.  Most people believe that sexual orientation is innate based on their personal experiences.  There is, of course, a difference between what one is and what one does. Some gay people might only engage in heterosexual encounters.  Some heterosexuals might engage in gay or lesbian encounters for one reason or another.   And, of course, there are bisexuals as well, those who feel comfortable and natural forming relationships and engaging in sexual relations with people regardless of gender.
